Unique Facts of Australia
Posted: under Australian Vacation.
If you go to Australia for vacation you may well end up buying enough to remember your visit there to need edge protectors to protect it during shipping. You might even need jumbo edge protectors or other custom packaging solutions depending on what you purchase. Be aware that the country has some unique customs while you are there though so that you are able to stay abreast of what is going on around you. Even though Australia uses English as the primary language, they still have their own slang and what they consider proper.
Because the country sits on a continent to itself all sides are bordered by water. To the west is the Indian Ocean. Across to the east is the South Pacific. North is the Coral Sea, and south is the Tasman Sea. Between Australia and Indonesian islands is the Arafura and Timor seas. It has a lot of beaches but one should not assume that only this marks the country. The interior has vast areas of semi-arid landscapes both cleared for grazing and agriculture and covered with native forests. The country is nearly 3 million square miles in size, with most of the population in Victoria and New South Wales.
The climate ranges from tropical to temperate, in reverse of most of the western world. By this, one should infer that the summers are in December -February (the rainy season) and winters are June-August (the dry season). At least this holds true for most of the country. Because of the long settlement time of the area and how it was discovered by western society, many place names reflect a mixture of languages. Dutch traders first located these shores in the 1600’s although thousands of years of Native occupation by those who had come from Indonesian islands would also leave a mark on place names.
Although English speaking overall, Australia’s cultural mix includes the original native peoples, deeply settled white families with English and Irish roots, and successive waves of immigrants from around the world. This makes the urbanized coastal areas to be highly multicultural in flavor. While the indigenous population does have historical tales about being displaced, they are perhaps among the most respected native groups in the world, with vast tracks of land with traditional sacred meaning being set aside for them.
So while one may freely roam across most open ground, as long as they don’t snap pictures of the indigenous people without asking permission first, and buy many things in the country (so many that they may need edge protectors to protect the boxes during shipping home), one should always remember that respect will take one far. That is a form of protection that not even jumbo edge protectors or custom packaging solutions can provide. Along this line, learning to respect nature and the unofficial requests of the native population in regards to personal safety while on their lands will garner increased respect in return and you might even leave with a priceless blessing.
